"IRCC EXTENDS POLICY ALLOWING INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TO WORK FULL-TIME"
Canada's Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the extension of a policy that allows certain international students to work beyond the usual 20-hour-per-week limit for off-campus employment. The temporary policy, initially implemented in 2022 due to labor shortages, was set to expire on December 31, 2023, but has now been extended until April 30, 2024.
Under the extended policy, international students in Canada, as well as applicants who submitted a study permit application as of December 7, 2023, will be allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week. To be eligible, students must be taking in-person classes at their Canadian post-secondary institution and have off-campus work authorization included on their study permit.
While the decision falls short of making the policy permanent, it provides relief to international students, allowing them to pursue full-time employment and alleviate financial concerns. This extension is particularly beneficial for students who face financial burdens and worry about money.
In addition to the extension, IRCC has indicated a commitment to exploring further measures. The announcement mentions the possibility of "expanding off-campus work hours for international students to 30 hours per week while class is in session." This potential increase would offer more flexibility to international students, as the current limit is set at 20 hours of off-campus work per week during class sessions.
As the situation evolves, it's important for international students to stay informed about policy updates. IRCC's commitment to examining options for the future suggests ongoing efforts to address the needs of international students in Canada.
